A LETTER FROM LINDA

At 57, I finally found a dress that doesn’t make me look like I’ve given up

Linda Flynn

Melbourne · 15 September 2026

I have never written anything like this before, and I nearly didn’t. But I’ve told enough friends about it now that it seemed easier to write it down.

My wardrobe had quietly become a sad little place. Half of the dresses in it were shapeless and made me feel twenty years older. The other half clung to every part of me I’d rather keep to myself. Most mornings I’d try one on, look in the mirror, sigh, and put my trousers back on.

You don’t stop wanting to wear a dress at our age. You just stop owning one you feel like yourself in.

And there’s always somewhere you need one for. A christening, a friend’s birthday lunch, the first warm Sunday of the year. Trousers do the job, but they never feel like an occasion, and you can’t help noticing everyone else made more of an effort.

With flat sandals. This is how I wear it most days.

THEN I FOUND THE AMBER

It didn’t look like any of the dresses I owned. It’s fitted just under the bust and then falls loose, so it moves when you walk instead of clinging, and it stops just below the knee, which is exactly where I like a dress to end. And it has pockets. Real ones.

It’s the Amber, from a small boutique called Willow Stitch, and it comes in a whole collection of embroidered prints. I ordered the grey that evening.

Straight out of the box: soft, light and no ironing needed

WHAT HAPPENED AT THE LUNCH

I wore it the first time the whole family came over for lunch.

Both of my sons’ wives noticed it before we’d even sat down. They’re both much younger than me and very particular about clothes, and neither of them has ever said much about anything I’ve worn. That day they both told me how lovely I looked.

It’s hardly been in the wardrobe since. Lunch out, the shops, a glass of wine in the garden on a warm evening. It goes with everything, and it never makes me look older than I am.

When I went back to the Willow Stitch website, I realised the Amber is just one of a whole collection: the same cut, the same fabric, more than 60 different embroidered prints. I’ve already got my eye on the next one.

THREE THINGS I’VE LEARNED SINCE

One. Once you know your size, you know it for all of them. Every dress in the collection has the same cut: fitted just under the bust, then falling loose so it skims over the tummy and hips. The Amber fits me perfectly, so I’m not nervous about ordering another print.

Two. The fabric is made for our summers. They’re all in the same light, breathable fabric that doesn’t stick to you on a 35-degree day, and they come out of the wash without needing an iron.

Three. Every single one has pockets. I didn’t think I cared about pockets until I had them. Phone, keys, a tissue. I’ll never buy a dress without them again.

My four favourites. I own every one of them now

ABOUT THE PRICE

I’ll be honest, the price made me more suspicious than anything. The dresses start from $59.95, and my first thought was that there had to be a catch. A dress that hangs this well and still looks this good after a dozen washes usually costs a great deal more.

There’s no catch that I’ve found. Willow Stitch is a small boutique that sells directly, without a shop or a middleman in between, and that’s where the difference goes.

I read the reviews before I ordered, the way you probably are now. Willow Stitch has more than 8,600 of them, sitting at 4.7 stars, and the same things kept coming up: the fit, the fabric, the pockets. That’s what decided it for me.

WHAT I’D TELL YOU OVER A CUPPA

If you and I were sitting down for a cuppa and you asked me, this is what I’d say. If your wardrobe is full of dresses you never wear, because not one of them makes you feel like yourself, it’s worth ten minutes of an evening to have a look at the collection.

Not because a dress changes your life. It doesn’t. But catching sight of yourself in a shop window and actually liking what you see is a small thing I’d stopped expecting. I’d rather you didn’t stop expecting it too.

Start with whichever print makes you smile. That’s what I did, and I haven’t worn one of my old dresses since.
