A LETTER FROM OLIVIA

At 58, I finally found a dress I CAN WEAR FROM THE OFFICE TO DINNER

Olivia Thompson

Brisbane · 30 September 2026

I’ve never written anything like this before, and I very nearly didn’t. But I’ve been asked about this dress so many times now that it seemed easier to write it down once.

For years, getting dressed was a juggling act. Something smart enough for work, something cool enough for a Brisbane afternoon, and then a change of clothes if I was meeting friends after. Most dresses only managed one of the three. The smart ones were stiff and hot, and the comfortable ones looked like I’d given up.

You don’t stop wanting to look put together at our age. You just stop finding clothes that let you do it comfortably.

And Brisbane doesn’t make it easy. By ten in the morning it’s already humid, and by the afternoon anything synthetic is sticking to you. I’d stopped believing a dress could look polished and still feel cool.

Ready for the office, and for whatever comes after.

THEN I FOUND THE CHARLOTTE

It didn’t look like any of the dresses I owned. It’s a soft cotton-linen blend that feels cool the moment you put it on, with a relaxed fit and a tie at the waist, so you can wear it loose on a hot day or pull it in for a more polished look. The 3/4 sleeves cover my arms without ever making me feel warm.

It’s the Charlotte, from a small boutique called Willow Stitch, and it’s part of a whole collection of light summer dresses. I ordered the blue that evening, before I could talk myself out of it.

The day it arrived. Soft, light and ready to wear.

WHAT MY COLLEAGUES SAID

I wore it to work on a Monday, mostly to see if I could get away with it.

By morning tea, two of the women in my team had asked where it was from. Then that evening I went straight from the office to dinner with my sister, without going home to change, and she said I looked like I’d just come back from a holiday. I’ve decided to take that as a very big compliment.

It’s barely been in the wardrobe since. Meetings, lunch with friends, dinner on a warm evening. I tie it at the waist for work and wear it loose on the weekend, and it never makes me look older than I am.

When I went back to the Willow Stitch website, I realised the Charlotte is just one of a whole collection of lightweight summer dresses. I’ve already got my eye on the next one.

THREE THINGS I’VE LEARNED SINCE

One. The waist tie does all the work. Pulled in, it looks smart enough for the office. Left loose, it’s the most comfortable thing I own. It’s like having two dresses in one.

Two. Cotton and linen are made for Brisbane. It’s light and breathable, so it doesn’t stick to you on a humid afternoon, and it goes straight in the washing machine.

Three. 3/4 sleeves are the secret. They cover the tops of my arms, which I’m happy to admit I care about, without ever making me feel hot. I don’t need a cardigan in the office anymore.

My four favourites from the collection.

ABOUT THE PRICE

I’ll be honest, the price made me more suspicious than anything. The Charlotte is $64.95, and my first thought was that there had to be a catch. A cotton-linen dress that hangs this well usually costs a great deal more.

There’s no catch that I’ve found. Willow Stitch is a small boutique that sells directly, without a shop or a middleman in between, and they’re running a closing sale.

I read the reviews before I ordered, the way you probably are now. Willow Stitch has more than 8,600 of them, sitting at 4.7 stars, and the same things kept coming up: the fit, the fabric, the comfort. That’s what decided it for me.

WHAT I’D TELL YOU OVER A CUPPA

If you and I were sitting down for a cuppa and you asked me, this is what I’d say. If you’re tired of choosing between looking smart and feeling comfortable, it’s worth ten minutes of an evening to have a look at the Charlotte.

Not because a dress changes your life. It doesn’t. But walking out the door in the morning knowing you’ll still feel good at dinner is a small thing I’d stopped expecting. I’d rather you didn’t stop expecting it too.

Pick the colour you’d reach for first. That’s what I did, and I haven’t packed a change of clothes for after work since.
